Announcing the
21st Century Championship Cup

OVERVIEW

The Intelligent Go Foundation is pleased to announce the 21st Century Championship Cup, a new computer go prize, to be awarded this year to the winner of the annual computer go competition held in conjunction with the US Go Congress planned for July 21st to 29th of 2001, in York, Pennsylvania, USA. The winning entrant will be presented the 21st Century Championship Cup, along with prize money of USD 5,000. The total purse amounts to approximately USD 15,000 including prizes to be awarded to the 2nd through 8th place finishers.

Also to be awarded is the Basis Technology 21st Century New Star Prize, to the best new (or most improved) entrant. Basis Technology is the leading provider of Asian computing technology, and this prize symbolizes Basis's commitment to furthering the alignment between modern technology and the ancient Asian art of go, and its interest in stimulating the development of new computer go programs and approaches. This prize will be awarded to the highest finishing entrant whose program has not, in its current major version, competed in a US computer go championship, Ing Cup, or FOST cup tournament.

In order to honor entrants contributing strongly to computer go over the long term, Intelligent Go is also inaugurating the 21st Century Hall of Fame, into which will be inducted any entrant that places in the top three for all of the 2001, 2002 and 2003 tournament years.

OTHER EVENTS

As part of the 21st Century Cup competition, Intelligent Go Foundation will sponsor speakers on computer go topics during the US Go Congress, open to all attendees of the Congress.

In addition, after the end of the competition, the 21st Century Champion will play an exhibition match against a representative 8-kyu player. If the computer program wins, it will be awarded an honorary 8-kyu ranking by the Intelligent Go Foundation, and the man-vs.-machine match at the next competition will be with a representative 7-kyu champion, and so on.
